28 For she said, If I touch but his garments, I shall be made whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her plague.
30 And straightway Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power [proceeding] from him had gone forth, turned him about in the crowd, and said, Who touched my garments?
31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
35 While he yet spake, they come from the ruler of the synagogue's [house] saying, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Teacher any further?
36 But Jesus, not heeding the word spoken, saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Fear not, only believe.
37 And he suffered no man to follow with him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
38 And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue; and he beholdeth a tumult, and [many] weeping and wailing greatly.
39 And when he was entered in, he saith unto them, Why make ye a tumult, and weep? the child is not dead, but sleepeth.
40 And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was.
41 And taking the child by the hand, he saith unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, Arise.
42 And straightway the damsel rose up, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were amazed straightway with a great amazement.
43 And he charged them much that no man should know this: and he commanded that [something] should be given her to eat.
- I. Mark's Story Within a Story.
- A. The intentional woman within the crowd.
- B. Indications of her intentions.
- C. Her actions and reasonings.
- 1. In the reality of her setting in life, she was unclean and forbidden to cause anyone else to be made unclean by her touch (Leviticus 15:19-28).
- 2. She pressed her "case" because "she had heard about Jesus" and that "hearing" was largely about how He dealt with people like her.
- 3. "I shall be delivered."
- a. This is the "declaration" of the faith that drove her to "come".
- b. As "faith" it had to have had some "tradition" within the culture that supported the ideas behind it because of some roots in "revelation, illumination, and conviction".
- 1) There was, in the Law, a "promise" regarding "health": Exodus 15:26; 23:25; and Deuteronomy 7:15.
- 2) These records of this "promise" begin with a "promise" to keep Israel from contracting "diseases" and then continue with a "promise" to remove "diseases" upon repentance.
- 3) These "promises/reiterations" are at the root of the link between Jesus' "Gospel" and "healings".
- D. The outcome.
- 1. "Immediately" (focus here) the well of her blood was dried up...
- a. The use of "immediately" most likely has a chronological meaning with the sense of "no significant amount of time passed", but it yet retains its major sense of "remarkably" with its strong implication that one focus on this fact. It is used both in this verse and "immediately" again in the next verse. Two facts are "remarkable" and need to be kept in mind: the touch resulted in miraculous healing; and Jesus reacted to the flow of power from himself to another.
- b. The use of "well" is also significant. The word so translated is, in the New Testament, always a source of "flowing" water unlike a cistern in which the water will become stale. This "flow" was not great (it did not immediately kill the woman), but it was extraordinarily bothersome.
- c. This "flowing spring" was dried up.
- d. Since this "flowing spring" was "of her blood" it was a danger to her "life" because "the life is in the blood" and it was "leaking away".
- 2. And she knew in the body that she had been healed [Perfect Tense] from the scourge.
- a. There was, apparently, a noticeable (sensory) sensation within her that told her she had been healed.
- b. The twelve-year-long "scourge".
- E. The reaction...
- 1. "Immediately" (focus here) The Jesus...
- a. Having known precisely in Himself the power having gone out from Him...
- b. Having turned in the crowd...
- c. "Was saying..."
- d. "Who grasped of Me the garments?"
- 2. The disciples of Him were saying to Him...
- a. You are seeing the crowd "afflicting You"... .
- 1) There is this, then, in the disciples' reaction: apparently many had "touched" His garments with no apparent consequence.
- 2) The "touching" had to be driven by "faith" in order to produce the sought after result.
- b. And You are saying, "Who grasped of Me?"
- 3. And He was looking around to see her that had done this thing.
- F. The outcome.
- 1. The woman...
- a. Having been frightened...
- b. And trembling...
- c. Having perceived what had happened to her...
- d. Came and fell down to Him...
- e. And said to Him all the truth.
- 2. Jesus...
- a. Said to her...
- b. "Daughter..."
- c. "Your faith has delivered you."
- d. "Go unto peace and be healed from your scourge."
