Luke's Record:
- I. Interesting Facts About Being "Thirty Years Old".
- A. Joseph was thirty years old when he began to "rule" Egypt. An interesting "aside" is that Jacob told Pharoah that he was 130 years old when he came to Egypt to live with Joseph. This would mean that Jacob was about 90 when Joseph was born and older than that when Benjamin was born. It is of little wonder, then, that Rachel died in childbirth being as old as she was.
- 1. This creates a bit of a question as to why Abraham would "laugh" when God told him he would have a son with Sarah at the age of 100. Terah lived 205 years, Abraham lived to be 175 (Sarah only lived 127 years; Ishmael only lived to be 137), Isaac lived 180 years, and Jacob lived to be 147.
- B. David was thirty years old when he began to rule Israel.
- C. Priests entered into their priestly service at the age of thirty.
- II. Being the supposed son of Joseph.
- A. The "Messiah Ben Joseph" motif is clearly apparent in this text: the Suffering Servant.
- B. The difference that stands out is that Joseph began to rule at "thirty" and Jesus is just about to begin to suffer.
- III. The Genealogy is not that of "Joseph".
- A. Luke deliberately says that Jesus was "supposed to be" the son of Joseph. He had to be the son of Adam. Thus, the genealogy was that of Mary so that Jesus was the son of Adam. The point of the genealogy is that Jesus was a man (Hebrews 2:17).
- B. The genealogy of Joseph is given by Matthew. It runs down through the Davidic line through Solomon and the "accursed" Coniah. It is the "regnal" lineage.
- C. This genealogical line runs down through the Davidic line through Nathan of whom we know almost nothing.
