8:5 And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.
8:6 And he commandeth the multitude to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, to set before them; and they set them before the multitude.
8:7 And they had a few small fishes: and having blessed them, he commanded to set these also before them.
8:8 And they ate, and were filled: and they took up, of broken pieces that remained over, seven baskets.
8:9 And they were about four thousand: and he sent them away.
8:10 And straightway he entered into the boat with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.
- I. Jesus' Response To His Disciples.
- A. The wording is very close to that found in 6:38-44; He is deliberately doing the same type of miracle again.
- B. This time there are seven loaves (instead of five) and there are "a few small fishes" (instead of two) ... more bread and more fishes than in the previous event.
- C. This time He does not "look up to heaven" before the "blessing", He simply "gave thanks".
- D. Both times "they were filled".
- E. This time there are seven baskets of food left over; the previous time there were twelve.
- F. This time there were four thousand; the prior time there were five thousand men.
- G. This time He immediately entered the boat with the disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha; the previous time He "immediately" sent the disciples away (to go to Bethsaida) and He went up on the mountain to pray.
- II. The major points of both of the events.
- A. There was a massive crowd both times.
- B. He provided far above what was needed.
