9:30 And they went forth from thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.
9:31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered up into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he shall rise again. [

9:32 But they understood not the saying, and were afraid to ask him.
- I. The "Going Forth From Thence".
- A. The first issue is the context of the event whence they were going: the attack upon Jesus because of the "failure of faith" in The Nine and its impact upon the crowd.
- 1. Jesus did get the job done, but the cracks are showing: one failure is exalted over a massive number of successes as far as the LIO (low information observer) is concerned. The depth of the entrenchment of Sin's corruption of the human heart is the root cause.
- 2. Jesus did highlight the problem, and the disciples were, eventually, profited by their failure.
- B. There is no obvious reason for the "passing through Galilee, especially with the accompanying comment about Jesus' NOT (ouk ethelen) being willing for anyone to know of His travels.
- 1. "Galilee" figures prominently in this record of Mark (he refers to this region in twelve texts of his record).
- 2. There are other texts which say that Jesus did not want people to know something.
- a) As early as 1:44 He is recorded as not wanting people to know something (in this case, the cleansing of the leper).
- b) In 5:43 He commanded that no one should know of His raising of Jairus' daughter.
- c) 7:24 -- when He was in the region of Tyre he did not want anyone to know, but His wish was not fulfilled.
- d) 9:30 -- our current text.
- 3. In this case, Jesus knew that His time was very near and He wanted to get His disciples prepared for what was coming.
- II. There Is This: Jesus Is Again (8:31; 9:9; 9:31; 10:34) Telling The Twelve Of His Coming Death/Resurrection.
- A. "He was teaching His disciples...".
- B. "He was saying to them that..."
- 1. The Son of The Man is being delivered up (Present Passive Indicative) into the hands of men.
- 2. And they shall kill Him.
- 3. And, having been killed, after three days, He shall raise Himself up (Future Middle Indicative), or He shall be raised (The Middle and Passive have the same form).
- III. The Disciples Were Ignorant And Made Afraid To Ask.
- A. This is as clear-cut a declaration of the fact (that the disciples did NOT have a legitimate grasp of what the Messianic Identity included) as can be found in the New Testament.
- B. This establishes the fact that "faith in Jesus as Messiah" is valid even when certain aspects of that identity are confused and wrong.
- 1. However, there are certain truths which have to surface in the hearts/minds of those who "believe" in order for "justification" to occur (Acts 15:5 compared with Galatians 2:4 and consider 1 Corinthians 15:12).
- a. There is a "process" in which "faith" grows into what God requires for justification.
- b. If that "process" is interrupted, justification does not occur (Revelation 3:1-3).
- 2. The Eleven were "in process"; they would come to grips with the "why" of Jesus' death only after the fact.
- a. There is such a thing as "progressive illumination" just as there is "progressive revelation".
- b. "Justification" is not the result of the initial stages of "faith"; everyone has to begin somewhere in the process of coming to the faith that pleases God.
